OUR STORY


Sometimes great ideas are born from accidents. In the mid-'90s, no one could have predicted the success of the Zumba®program, not even Alberto "Beto" Perez, who created the Zumba experience, after what many have called a true "happy accident."

 

THE ORIGINAL "FITNESS-PARTY"

As a fitness instructor in his native Cali, Colombia, Beto's life took an unexpected turn one fateful day in the mid-'90s when he darted off to teach an aerobics class and forgot his traditional aerobics music. He improvised using his own mix of music from tapes he had in his backpack (salsa and merengue music he grew up with). Spontaneously he created a new kind of dance-fitness, one that focused on letting the music move you (instead of counting reps over the music). Energy electrified the room; people couldn't stop smiling. His class loved it! And on that day, a revolutionary new fitness concept was born – the Zumba® Fitness-Party.

 

ZUMBA® FITNESS: THE COMPANY

In 2001, Beto brought his new dance-fitness style to Miami, Florida, and, through a student (Alberto Perlman’s mom), met entrepreneurs Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion. All three hailed from Colombia and all three had a vision to bring this dynamic dance-fitness class to the masses. The three Albertos formed an alliance and created a business, calling it Zumba Fitness. They trademarked the word Zumba® and set a goal to expand the brand all over the world. First came the DVDs, then the infomercial – which introduced the Zumba Fitness-Party to the public on a wide-scale basis – then came the demand for Zumba classes and Zumba Instructors. That’s when the company took off and the Zumba program expanded in a big way. By 2005, Zumba Fitness spawned a full-fledged Zumba Academy™ to license Zumba Instructors to teach Zumba classes. More expansion followed with the launch of Zumbawear™ apparel and accessories, music CDs, and in 2008, one of the best-selling at-home fitness DVD series ever – the Zumba Fitness® Total Body Transformation System – which starred Beto and introduced Zumba Fitness’ newest stars, Tanya Beardsley and Gina Grant. In 2010, Zumba shook the ground (once again) by being the first branded fitness program to launch a video game on all three major gaming platforms: Wii, Xbox, and PS3.

ZUMBA® CLASSES


The Zumba program currently offers eight types of Zumba classes:

 Zumba® Fitness – When participants see a Zumba class in action, they can’t wait to give it a try. Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Before participants know it, they’re getting fit and their energy levels are soaring! There’s no other fitness class like a Zumba Fitness-Party. Zumba Gold®  – Zumba Gold targets the largest growing segment of the population: baby boomers. It takes the Zumba formula and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of the active older participant, as well as those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. What stays the same are all the elements the Zumba Fitness-Party is known for: the zesty Latin music, like salsa, meringue, cumbia and reggae ton; the exhilarating, easy-to-follow moves; and the invigorating, party-like atmosphere. Active older adults want camaraderie, excitement and fitness as a regular part of their weekly schedule. Zumba Gold is the perfect fit. It’s a dance-fitness class that feels friendly, and most of all, fun.

 

 Zumba® Toning  – When it comes to body sculpting, Zumba Toning raises the bar (or rather, the toning stick). It combines targeted body-sculpting exercises and high-energy cardio work with Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching, strength-training dance fitness-party. Students learn how to use lightweight, maraca-like Toning Sticks to enhance rhythm and tone all their target zones, including arms, abs, gluts and thighs. HISTORY

People around the world, including our company, rely on our trademarks to identify our products and services and to distinguish them from those of our competitors. As the creators and global leaders in dance fitness programs, DVD’s, video games, clothing, and accessories, Zumba Fitness takes great pride in it's products and programs and works relentlessly to improve its products and services. We believe that our passion for excellence is unrivaled.

 

If Zumba Fitness' trademarks became "generic" in a particular area, they might cease to protect consumers and the company from knowing the source of its products and services – anyone may be able to use them without concern of a trademark infringement claim, creating confusion in the marketplace. This is because the word or symbol would no longer indicate to the public that the products or services bearing the ZUMBA® Trademarks originate from one source, namely, Zumba Fitness, LLC.

The ZUMBA® brand name and related word and logo trademarks should only be used to indicate the source of our particular programs and related products and should not be used to refer to any fitness program or goods or services other than Zumba Fitness' and its authorized licensees' programs.

 

THE ZUMBA® TRADEMARKS


Trademark offices around the world provide our company with legal means for protecting consumers, licensees, distributors and our company from imitation and infringing or counterfeit products and programs. These rights include the exclusive right to use our trademarks in the countries where they are registered. Our registered trademarks enjoy a presumption of validity around the world. Proper use of our trademarks serves to distinguish ZUMBA® products and services from the products and services of other companies, prevents the likelihood that consumers are confused, and helps prevent damage to our marks, including, for example, tarnishment, dilution and genericization.

In the United States, ZUMBA®, ZUMBA FITNESS®, ZUMBATOMIC®, ZUMBA GOLD®, ZUMBATHON®, ZUMBAWEAR® and ZLIFE® are registered trademarks of Zumba Fitness, LLC. (Collectively, "The ZUMBA Trademarks"). We also have trademark rights in the following Zumba Fitness Brands: DITCH THE WORKOUT-JOIN THE PARTY, ZUMBA SENTAO™FITNESS-CONCERT™, ZIN and ZES.

Zumba Fitness has filed for variations of Zumba® trademarks and logos worldwide and already owns trademark registrations in most countries, including all members of the European Community, most of North and South America, Asia and Oceania.

 

WHO MAY USE THE ZUMBA® FITNESS TRADEMARK AND LOGO?


Only those licensed by Zumba Fitness, LLC (including current ZIN™ members) have any rights to use the ZUMBA® Trademarks. Licensees are required by contract and law to follow the guidelines in their written license agreements. ZIN™ Members can review the ZIN™ Membership & License Agreement by logging into their ZIN™ account and visiting the ZIN™ License and Support Page. We ask that our licensees and enthusiasts of the ZUMBA® program everywhere contact us immediately if they become aware of any unauthorized or improper use of the ZUMBA® Trademarks.

1. USE THE SERVICE OR PRODUCT’S GENERIC NAME:

It is important to use the Zumba® Trademarks to describe the generic name of the products and services. And always use the trademark indicators ® and ™ after the trademark.

Never use the ZUMBA® Trademarks as nouns or verbs. For example, never use "ZUMBA" as a verb to describe an exercise program or class. It is proper to say "I love the ZUMBA fitness program" and improper to say "I love ZUMBA".

 

7. AVOID USING THE ZUMBA® TRADEMARK AS A TRADE OR COMPANY NAME:

It is incorrect to use or refer to the ZUMBA® Trademarks as a trade name (e.g., company name or facility name). For example, don't name your company with ZUMBA® in the title. Name your company something else and say that it offers the ZUMBA® program or classes.

 

THE ZUMBA® TRADEMARKS SHOULD NOT BE USED IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:


With the letter "Z" not capitalized—For example, zumba or zumba fitness.

Misspelled — For example, "Zoomba" is not allowed.

As a verb — For example, "once you zumba, you’ll be hooked" is not allowed.

As a noun — For example, "zumba is my favorite exercise" is not allowed.

As part of a trade name — For instance, "The California Zumba Center" is not allowed.

As a generic term — For example, as a name for a fitness program "My gym offers Zumba" is not allowed.

To advertise programs or products not affiliated with Zumba Fitness, LLC.

 

USE OF THE ZUMBA® LOGOS


The ZUMBA® Logos were designed to designate products and services developed by Zumba Fitness, LLC and may be used by licensees in their exact form and only to advertise and promote Zumba Fitness programs and products. Under no circumstances may the ZUMBA® Logos be used, without Zumba Fitness, LLC's express written consent, to manufacture and sell products such as clothing or any other merchandise. ZIN™ members have access to the correct and current format of the ZUMBA® Logos in the Marketing Materials. The ZUMBA® Logos are not to be used in any form that vary from the samples provided and must not be used in combination with any other trade names, trademarks or logos.
