For the month of August and for our featured flower of the week, we are featuring 3 flowers or blooms that match our current month. These are the Black Eyed Susan flowers, Bottle Gentian flower and the Dense Blazingstar flower.

For the first flower we are featuring, Black Eyed Susan is covered with brilliant yellow flowers with jet-black centers for up to three months in summer and fall, often right up to the first hard frost. Grows two-to-five feet tall. This plant is a favorite of many home gardeners. The species is a short-lived perennial, often living only two or three years. It produces copious amounts of seed and quickly re-seeds itself. It is also the State Flower of Maryland. For our second featured flower, the deep bluish purple flowers of Bottle Gentian never fully open, giving them their characteristic bottle-like appearance. Its shape prevents all but the largest insects from entering. Bumblebees force themselves inside by pushing the petals apart. One of the last plants to bloom in fall, it grows one-to-two feet tall. And for our last featured flower, the dense Blazing Star features bold purple flower clusters on tall spikes. The flowers are very attractive to butterflies and moths.
